Historical Letters Donated To Archives in February, 2009

The Shenandoah Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS) was pleased to announce the acquisition of three historical letters relating to events in Winchester, VA, during the Civil War.   At the general meeting on February 4, 2009, Lois Marbert, Records Chair for the Archives Materials Fund, presented these letters to Stewart Bell Jr. Archivist, Rebecca Ebert.  They will be added to the Archive’s Civil War Collection.  The Stewart Bell, Jr., Archives is located in the basement of the Handley Regional Library, 100 W. Piccadilly St., Winchester.

The letters remark of the daily activities of the era as well as the tragedies of living in war time.  William Travis in 1865 writes of being hired as a wagon master for $60 per month.  He led a train of 25 wagons and spoke of hauling dead bodies from the battlefield.

An important goal of SVGS is to give back to those facilities which help us with our research. Another project of the Archives Materials Fund is providing free subscriptions for genealogy periodicals to some local libraries.   We hope you will stop by the Stewart Bell, Jr. Archives to see these fascinating letters and to avail yourselves of other materials and services provided by the library
